Tourists Trapped by Tide on Oregon's Lost Boy Beach Rescued After Five Hours
Three visitors seeking a scenic photo found themselves cut off by rising waters, prompting an emergency satellite call and a challenging rescue operation.

A group of three visitors seeking a picturesque photo opportunity on Oregon's remote Lost Boy Beach found themselves in an unexpected emergency last week, requiring a dramatic rescue by local fire crews. The individuals were stranded for five hours last Wednesday, September 16, after a rapidly incoming tide isolated them within the secluded Tillamook County cove. After losing conventional cell phone service at the base of the steep coastal cliff, the group successfully contacted emergency services using an integrated satellite feature on their device.
Emergency Response and Difficult Conditions
The Netarts-Oceanside Fire District (NOFD) responded to the distress call, locating the visitors on an ever-shrinking strip of sand as the tide advanced. A drone deployed by the department captured images of the group signaling for help, having arranged sticks to spell out a large "SOS" on the beach. Lost Boy Beach is characterized by its challenging access, requiring navigation over rocky terrain and passage through a sea cave open at both ends. While the cove appears inviting during low tide, the rising ocean waters quickly seal off this sole exit.
NOFD Chief Jeff McBrayer underscored the inherent risks of the location, stating,
"When people are stranded there, we may not be able to get to them."Initially, rescue personnel contemplated waiting for the tide to recede. However, they ultimately decided on an immediate, active rescue due to the hazardous combination of rough surf, unpredictable sneaker waves, and the fact that the stranded individuals were already experiencing wet and cold conditions.
Rescuers meticulously navigated the perilous environment, adhering closely to the diminishing shoreline while secured by ropes, rather than attempting to wade through the treacherous, unpredictable water. Upon reaching the group, responders supplied life vests, attached the individuals to safety ropes, and carefully guided them through the surf to a more secure location where they could safely exit on foot. The tourists sustained only minor scrapes and bruises from their ordeal.
A Warning About Isolated Coves
In the aftermath of the rescue, Chief McBrayer took the opportunity to caution coastal visitors about the often-underestimated perils associated with exploring secluded coves along the shoreline. He emphasized the importance of preparedness:
"You have to ask a local or check a tide app on a phone for tide information."
The Legend and Peril of Lost Boy Beach
Lost Boy Beach, located on the northern Oregon coast immediately south of a prominent basalt cliff, bears a name steeped in a century-old local legend. According to regional folklore, this highly isolated location earned its name from a young boy reportedly drowned after becoming trapped by the incoming tide. While the historical accuracy of this somber tale remains unconfirmed, the name has endured for approximately a century, serving as a persistent, inherent warning to those who visit about the cove's unpredictable and potentially lethal conditions.
Historically, reaching this hidden stretch of sand has always been notoriously difficult. It is situated between Short Beach to the north and Tunnel Beach, sometimes referred to as Star Trek Beach, to the south. In contrast to its adjacent Short Beach, which saw the construction of a community-built "stairway of 100 steps" around the year 2000 to improve safety and prevent accidents on a treacherous cliff face, Lost Boy Beach has never had secure overland access. Approaching the beach from either direction is exceedingly hazardous, with passage only marginally feasible during rare, extreme low-tide occurrences, which typically happen just a few times annually.
