Massachusetts Republican Candidate Halts Campaign Following Alleged Drunken Driving Crash
A late-night vehicle incident involving a Republican candidate has led to his arrest and a swift suspension of his statewide campaign weeks before the November election.

A Republican candidate vying for a statewide office in Massachusetts has abruptly halted his campaign after being involved in a late-night crash that resulted in his arrest on suspicion of operating under the influence. The incident occurred just weeks before voters are set to cast their ballots in the upcoming election.
Incident Details and Charges
The New Bedford Police Department reported that officers responded to the scene at 448 Dartmouth Street around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday. A vehicle had reportedly overturned after colliding with several parked cars. Officials noted that two of the five parked vehicles sustained extensive damage.
Authorities identified Shawn Oliver as the driver. He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Following an investigation conducted both at the crash site and the hospital, officers took Oliver into custody. He faces charges including operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, and speeding.
Gubernatorial Candidate Calls for Suspension
In response to the news, Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike Minogue publicly urged Oliver to suspend his campaign. Minogue expressed his profound disappointment via social media.
“I am extremely disappointed. Shawn is lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt,” Minogue stated. “There is no excuse for driving under the influence.”
Minogue, a businessman and military veteran challenging incumbent Democratic Governor Maura Healey, confirmed he had a conversation with Oliver before making his demand.
“After speaking with Shawn, I am asking him to suspend his campaign immediately, and when elected, I will formally ask for his resignation,” Minogue wrote.
Oliver Confirms Campaign Halt
Oliver, a city councilor, subsequently confirmed the suspension of his campaign on social media, emphasizing the importance of the election.
“The election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters,” Oliver posted.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell also released a statement on social media, confirming that the accident took place in the city’s South End.
“This morning, I was made aware that City Councilor Shawn Oliver was involved in a car accident in the South End and taken into custody,” Mayor Mitchell stated. He added, “I’m grateful to the New Bedford Police Department for their prompt response and relieved that no one was seriously injured.”
The Democratic mayor also called for Oliver to publicly address the incident.
“The allegations against Councilor Oliver are deeply concerning, and the public deserves to hear his explanation of what happened,” Mitchell commented.
Focus on Family and Accountability
Minogue continued to emphasize the personal responsibilities facing Oliver, urging him to prioritize his family and take measures to prevent any future incidents.
“Shawn is a father and grandfather, and he needs to put his family first. He needs to do the work to ensure this never happens again,” Minogue wrote, offering support. “If he needs help with that, I will help him.”
Minogue also used the opportunity to critique his Democratic opponent, Governor Healey.
“As governor, I will put the Commonwealth first. That starts with accountability, something Massachusetts has not seen from Maura Healey,” Minogue asserted.
In a related development, a department spokesman, Scott J. Croteau, confirmed that Shawn Oliver has been placed on restricted work duty pending a review of all facts and circumstances. Oliver is currently assigned to the Massachusetts Treatment Center.
This campaign suspension occurs just weeks ahead of the crucial November election, where Minogue is challenging Governor Healey, and Democratic Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll is seeking reelection.
