Bryce Harper Addresses Cameo Controversy Involving FanDuel and Gambler Lawsuit
The Phillies star is under scrutiny after a personalized video he recorded appeared in a lawsuit against a prominent sports betting platform.

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper is currently navigating a significant sports betting controversy within Major League Baseball. The situation stems from a personalized video he recorded through the Cameo platform in November 2024, intended for a gambler identified as Terry Thompson.
Harper has now publicly addressed the contentious video, asserting that he believed he was simply recording a holiday greeting. However, this message has since become a key element in a lawsuit alleging that FanDuel specifically targeted Thompson, who reportedly wagered $18.5 million with various sportsbooks, losing over $1.5 million on the FanDuel platform alone.
Thompson's legal action against FanDuel and several other parties has drawn Harper directly into the heart of the dispute.
Harper's Explanation and Defense
Amid escalating public attention, Harper issued a statement via his Instagram Stories, seeking to distance himself from FanDuel and the broader controversy. He explained his participation in Cameo as a way to connect with fans through personalized, paid video messages.
"What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved," Harper wrote, clarifying his role. He maintained that he received what he perceived as a personal request to send Thanksgiving wishes to "Terry," rather than an order from a corporate entity.
Harper further claimed that after he recorded the message, FanDuel subsequently affixed its logo to the video and utilized it as a promotional tool for gambling.
"I did not know FanDuel would do this, I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it," he stated in his message.
The Script Discrepancy
Despite Harper's claims of unawareness, a significant detail challenges his explanation: the instructions he received and the exact script he read on camera explicitly referenced the sportsbook.
In the video footage, Harper is seen looking directly into the camera, telling Thompson that he was reaching out because "your host Bryttanni from FanDuel" wanted to ensure he had a particularly special holiday. This direct mention of the platform makes it challenging for Harper to assert complete ignorance regarding FanDuel's involvement.
Harper indicated that he read the provided script "in good faith." However, for a high-profile athlete of Harper's stature, reading a sportsbook's name within a paid video without raising any questions presents a difficult image.
Regulatory Scrutiny and MLB's Potential Response
The focus now shifts to whether Major League Baseball will delve deeper into the matter. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has already initiated an investigation into FanDuel's practice of using celebrity messages to target high-roller VIP bettors.
It remains to be seen if Major League Baseball will determine that Harper crossed any ethical boundaries. While there is no indication Harper placed bets on baseball, the situation is likely to attract considerable attention due to its direct connection to a promotional message tied to a sports betting operator.
At best, Harper's actions could be viewed as remarkably naive, failing to comprehend that a script mentioning a "FanDuel host" inherently constituted a gambling promotion. At worst, he may have accepted a paid request without sufficient inquiry and is now attempting to mitigate the fallout as the serious implications of sports betting addiction gain public prominence.
Regardless of the interpretation, this incident reflects poorly on one of baseball's most recognizable figures. Moving forward, Harper may find it prudent to thoroughly review the details before recording similar paid endorsements.
