Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas Criticizes WNBA Commissioner Following Suspension for Foul on Caitlin Clark
After receiving a one-game suspension for a flagrant foul, Alyssa Thomas voiced strong disapproval of the WNBA's commissioner and the public narrative, citing threats against players.

Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas directed criticism at WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert on Tuesday, shortly after being handed a one-game suspension for a flagrant foul against Indiana Fever's prominent player, Caitlin Clark. Thomas stated that she was informed of her suspension just minutes before it was publicly announced, and she accused Engelbert of neglecting players and maintaining silence amidst significant public outcry.
"Honestly, I didn't even know I was being suspended until 10 minutes before it was put on social media. We still have yet to hear anything from Cathy. It's no surprise. You can see what's being said on social media. Yeah, I mean, it's unfortunate, but as usual she remains silent, and that's unfortunate when our lives are being threatened."
League's Response and Player's Reaction
These remarks from Thomas followed closely after the WNBA issued her a suspension for the flagrant action against Clark, an incident the league's administrative body concluded merited further disciplinary measures.
She further expressed her frustration, saying:
"It's crazy, you know, playing the game, being suspended, just the whole narrative that's being painted out there. It's unfortunate that it's come to this over basketball. A lot of us, myself included, didn't even know the play took place until after the game and now we're being painted as thugs. And death threats out on us, so it's really unacceptable. It is something that needs to change in this league, and I'm just really sick and tired of it."
The absence of self-accountability in Thomas's statements was notably apparent. Instead of addressing the dangerous play that resulted in her suspension, Thomas promptly redirected the conversation, presenting her disciplinary action, rather than the forceful contact with Clark, as the primary injustice. This approach represents a peculiar defense from an athlete known for her physically assertive style of play and a long-standing reputation for imposing her presence through robust contact on the court.
The Broader Debate on Player Safety
Her comments also highlight the ongoing discussion surrounding the officiating and protection afforded to Clark. For several months, Clark has consistently faced aggressive fouls, excessive physical contact, and increasingly perilous plays. Simultaneously, the league has appeared to struggle in its efforts to consistently address the physical nature of play directed at the athlete largely credited for significantly boosting its television viewership, attendance numbers, and overall popularity.
Nevertheless, when a seasoned player finally faces substantial disciplinary action, the discourse frequently shifts away from concerns about Clark's safety and toward eliciting sympathy for the player who committed the infraction. While such discussions do not justify any actual threats, these claims do not alter the fundamental reason for Thomas's initial suspension.
In contrast, Clark has maintained her characteristic approach throughout her career: she continues to recover quickly, makes minimal public statements, and consistently performs, even as she has become a primary target within the league. She endures a level of physical treatment that few other superstars in professional sports are typically expected to withstand, all while generating record-breaking television ratings, attendance figures, and an unprecedented surge in interest for the WNBA.
Thomas had a clear opportunity to acknowledge that the play warranted disciplinary action. Instead, she opted to present herself as the aggrieved party.
